The Day of Your Sleep Study

Preparing for Your Sleep Study; The Do's and Don't's

There are a few rules to follow on the day of your sleep study to ensure best the results.

  • No caffeine after 12:00 noon on the day of your appointment.
  • No alcoholic beverages after 12:00 noon on the day of your appointment.
  • Take your prescribed medication as usual, but consult with us before taking over-the-counter medications on the day of your appointment.
  • Please bathe and wash your hair before your study but please do not use any hair conditioners or product.
  • Please do not use any make-up or skin cream conditioners that may prevent the stickers from adhering.
  • Bring along reading material that will encourage sleepiness.
  • Pack a small overnight bag if you won't be able to return home before going to work. Include towels, washcloths, toothpaste, toothbrush or comb, and any of your medications.
  • Please report to our United Health Systems facilities by 8:30 P.M. on the night of your appointment. The overnight study usually concludes by 7:00 A.M. unless the prescribing doctor decides that more testing is necessary.
  • What to wear? We recommend pajamas or nightgown, bathrobe, and slippers.
  • Unfortunately you may not take your own bedding or pillows to the laboratory.
  • We offer one queen-sized bed, satellite television, an alarm clock, and all the necessary computerized monitoring equipment to study your sleep patterns in each room.
  • *If you are running late or have an emergency and will need to cancel your appointment, please call as soon as possible to let us know.
