UHS Sleep Labs

The Sleep Study
A sleep study, also known as a Polysomnogram, consists of taking various measurements using the latest applied medical technology: Sleep Stages are recorded by taking signals from wires affixed to your scalp, side of your face and under your chin. Heartbeats are recorded via Electrocardiogram. Leg movements are followed using wires affixed to your legs. Breathing is monitoring through cloth bands placed around your chest and stomach areas. Oxygen levels in the blood are measured by a Pulse Oximeter, which is placed on your finger via a finger clip.

Staff
A UHS laboratory technician remains overnight in a adjacent room and is available to assist you during the night.

Appointment
On the night of your appointment you should report to our UHS facilities by 8:30 P.M. The overnight study usually concludes by 7:00 A.M. unless the prescribing doctor decides that more testing is necessary. You do not need to bring an alarm clock. If you are running late or have an emergency, which requires cancellation of your appointment, please call as soon as possible to let us know.

Sleep Attire
For comfortable sleeping bring your nightclothes: Pajamas or Nightgown, bathrobe and slippers. If you wish, you may bring your favorite pillow.

Facilities
Each bedroom within the UHS laboratory contains one queen sized bed, a television and all the necessary computerized monitoring equipment to study your sleep patterns.

Preparing for a UHS Sleep Study

  • Don't drink any caffeinated beverages including coffee, tee, or cola products such as Coke, Pepsi or Dr. Pepper or alcoholic beverages (Beer, liquor, wine or brandy) after 12:00 noon on the day of your appointment.
  • You may take any of your prescribed medication. However, if you plan to take over the counter medications on the day of your appointment you should ask the sleep technician in advance.
  • You should bathe and shampoo your hair prior to your visit. However, because we will be applying leads to your skin and scalp, we request that you not use any hair conditioners, creams, oils or dressings, not any make up, skin cream conditioners.
  • You may want to bring some nighttime reading material. Please also remember to bring any items you may need in the morning: Towels, washcloths, toothpaste, toothbrush or comb, and any of your medications.

Results
The results of your UHS sleep study will be explained to you by your doctor at your follow up visit.
